“It’s not just cold; It’s life-threatening.”
That’s what one elderly man told us last winter as we wrapped him in a blanket standing in a freezing park. He hadn’t eaten. He had no shoes. And he had no place to go.
This is the harsh reality for thousands of South Africans. As the cold sets in, those living in poverty, homelessness and unsafe shelters are pushed to the very edge of survival.
What Is WinterHope?
WinterHope is an urgent emergency response to the winter season. Every year, we act swiftly and compassionately to meet the immediate survival needs of the most vulnerable individuals—especially children, the elderly and homeless adults.
We provide
- Warm clothing (jackets, socks, beanies, scarves, gloves, blankets).
- Hot meals and food parcels.
- Emergency hygiene and dignity packs.
- Safe shelter referrals and trauma support.
- Human connection and care.
These aren’t handouts. They are acts of dignity. They’re often the first point of rescue in someone’s journey out of poverty and back into community.
The Facts You Should Know
- Temperatures during winter can drop below 0°C at night.
- 1 in 3 homeless people reported having no blanket or warm clothing during winter.
- Young children and aged people are at highest risk of hypothermia-related illness.
- Last year alone, we distributed over 49,177 Meals, 2,654 Blankets and distributed over 1,500 Bags of Clothing through WinterHope.
And still, many went without. We need to do more—and we need to do it now.
