“It wasn’t the cold that broke me. It was knowing nobody was coming.”
Those were the words of a man we met at a Pretoria shelter last winter. He had been sleeping outside for three nights before someone brought him in. He had a blanket — but it was wet. He had shoes — but they had holes. He had hope — but it was fading.
This is the reality WinterHope has been fighting for 25 years.
25 Years of Showing Up
WinterHope began with a simple conviction: that no South African should face winter alone. What started as a local response has grown into a national movement — spanning all 9 provinces, hundreds of drop-off points, and thousands of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
This year, WinterHope 2026 launches with more reach, more partners, and more urgency than ever before.
The Need Has Not Gone Away
Winter in South Africa is not an inconvenience. For thousands of people experiencing homelessness, poverty, or unsafe living conditions, it is a crisis.
- Temperatures regularly drop below 0°C at night across multiple provinces.
- Children, the elderly, and adults without shelter are at highest risk of hypothermia.
- Many go through entire winters without a warm blanket, a hot meal, or a dry pair of socks.
In 2025, WinterHope responded with:
- 15,704 beds occupied
- 56,676 meals and food parcels distributed
- 1,704 blankets handed out
- 1,011 bags of clothing collected
And still, the need was greater than what we could meet. This year, we want to go further.
What We Provide
Every donation to WinterHope translates directly into real relief for real people:
- Warm clothing — jackets, socks, beanies, scarves, gloves, blankets
- Non-perishable food parcels
- Basic hygiene and dignity packs
- Safe shelter referrals and community support
These are not handouts. They are acts of dignity — and often the first step in someone’s journey back to stability.
